TIS Annual Curriculum Night
The International School of Macao (TIS) hosted Curriculum Night on the evenings of 15th and 22nd of September 2022 with parents, teachers and staff in attendance.
The annual occurrence provides parents and guardians with the opportunity to better immerse themselves in their child’s education by opening a direct line of communication with teachers and staff that interact with them on a day-to-day basis. This year, to better accommodate parents that might have children on the primary and secondary grade levels, Curriculum Night was split into two different nights, enabling parents to attend both events without risking their attention. The first night was directed at parents of secondary students, ranging from Grade 7 to 12, while the second welcomed parents of primary students, ranging from Kindergarten (Pre-Kindergarten, Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten) to Elementary (Grade 1 to 6).
The event commenced with a brief introduction from the leadership team. Head of School, Mr. Lorne Schmidt welcomed attendees and spoke of the year ahead as TIS continues to optimize the quality of the education provided and thrives to become the premier international school of Macao and the Greater Bay Area. TIS currently offers high school students the opportunity to complete their education with an Alberta High School Diploma, a combination of this diploma and a partial International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme through units of inquiry, or a full IB Diploma. These internationally recognized certificates propel TIS students to being accepted in top universities around the world.
As parents gravitate towards different classrooms, they are greeted with a variety of presentations that showcase the curriculum’s learning subjects. Among the standard subjects such as English, Math, Humanities and Mandarin, TIS offers an array of programmes that include Model United Nations, Athletics, Leadership and Production Activities, Experience Week, Duke of Edinburgh Award and much more. Parents are able to take a deep dive into how these programmes help compliment and build up their child’s knowledge and skill set, better preparing them for higher education, as these are pursuits that universities look for and set their applications apart.
Primary school parents have a chance to explore the classrooms and experience the calming and nurturing atmosphere provided for their children. They will also encounter the foundation for the highly anticipated IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), a student-centered educational approach to learning that promotes inquisitive thinking, self-efficiency and confident learners.
The event came to an end with parents assured of the strong curriculum and the enabling learning environment their children are growing in. It is safe to say TIS is off to an impressive start as students are empowered to learn and strive for greatness.
